Detective Division
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department Detective Division is under the command of Captain Paul Lecomte. Two teams of detectives staff the Detective Division, each under the direct supervision of a Detective Sergeant. The Detective Sergeants supervise the day to day operations of the Division. The division is supported by three civilian staff members.
The Detective Division is comprised of the following units:
- Detective Bureau
- Identification Bureau
- Juvenile Aid Bureau
- Field Intelligence Unit
- School Resource Officer
- DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Officer
The Detective Bureau investigates crimes and complaint reports primarily generated by the uniform Patrol Division. These crimes and complaints can range in severity from identity theft and larceny to homicides and armed robberies.

Detectives receive training from state, federal resources or other law enforcement agencies in such diverse areas as:
- Forensic interviewing
- Crime scene processing
- Polygraph examination
- Computer forensics
- Criminal investigation
- Arson investigation
- Financial crimes
- Child abuse investigation
Members of the Detective Division are fully trained and certified to participate in the following specialized units within the department:
- Polygraph Examination Unit
- Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT)
- Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU)
- Dutchess County Drug Task Force
- Bicycle Unit
The Detective Division is fully computerized allowing for easy access to data and accurate record keeping. The division is thoroughly equipped for special operations with electronic surveillance equipment, digital photography equipment and laptop computers for instant access to the department computer system from the field.
