July 13, 2012 – Residential Scams
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department warns residents of scams occurring in the town. Individuals are going door to door, posing as employees of Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation, attempting to gain access into homes.
A town resident was advised by an individual, posing as a Central Hudson employee, that there was a gas leak and he needed to get in the basement. Once inside the house, the individual lured the victim to the basement. After the individual left the residence, the victim discovered cash missing.
A second report involved an individual, posing as a Central Hudson employee, checking on elderly people to see if they were ok, if they lived alone and if they had someone caring for them. Often, this is when someone may enter through another area of the house to search for valuables.
Residents are advised that Central Hudson employees carry identification with them at all times and they must present it when asked.
Also, residents are urged to use caution when being solicited for services offering chimney sweeps, paving and general home repair. Some tips to consider:
1) Do not do business with door to door solicitors, seek out the service yourself.
2) Contractors should be able to prove they have a license and insurance
3) Don’t do business on the spot, get references. Don’t be pressured by a limited time offer or “fantastic deal”.
4) Never pay in cash. Make payment by check (payable to a business name) or by credit card.
5) Make sure you obtain a reputable receipt.
6) Read contracts closely, make sure they are signed and obtain a copy.
7) Anyone soliciting business or selling products door-to-door in the Town of Poughkeepsie must obtain a Peddler’s Permit from Town Hall and provide it when soliciting.
Anytime you feel intimidated or uncomfortable, lock your door and call police. Obtain as much information about the solicitor such as personal description, clothing, vehicle description, license plate and the direction which they left.
If you encounter a similar incident or want the report a suspicious person, contact the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department at 485-3666.
