February 26, 2014 – Accident, Pedestrian

The Town of Poughkeepsie Traffic Enforcement Unit reports investigating a three-car personal injury motor vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 10:28am on February 26 2014.  This occurred on State Route 9 in the area of the Galleria Mall.  A 2003 Ford Windstar van driven by an 83 year old Staatsburg woman was traveling northbound when it stuck a stopped 2014 Subaru Legacy sedan.  The Subaru had stopped for a disabled vehicle in the left lane, a 2003 Ford Taurus. The accident resulted in a pedestrian, an 85 year old Poughkeepsie woman, being pinned between her disabled vehicle and the Subaru.  The pedestrian was transported to St. Francis Hospital by Mobile Life Ambulance for serious injuries to both her legs.  The road was closed for some time while preliminary measurements and photographs were taken of the scene.  The Town of Poughkeepsie Police were assisted by the New Hamburg Fire Department.

February 21, 2014 – Bank Robbery Arrests

On Thursday, February 20, 2014 at approximately 3:14 p.m., the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to a bank robbery having just occurred at Riverside Bank, 2064 New Hackensack Road, Town of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

A bank teller was approached by a female suspect who produced a written note demanding money. The suspect was described as white, approximately 5’7′ tall and wearing sunglasses. The teller complied with the demand and the suspect left without further incident. Acting on a description of the suspect and a possible vehicle used, area police agencies were alerted.

Approximately 15 minutes later, a Town of Poughkeepsie Police Officer located and followed a vehicle matching the reported description. Together with a trooper with the New York State Police, the officers stopped the suspect vehicle on Old Manchester Road just off Route 55 in the Town of Poughkeepsie. Three (3) persons were detained, two male and one female. As a result of that vehicle stop the three suspects were identified as being involved in the robbery and were taken into custody. Proceeds from the robbery were recovered in the suspect’s vehicle, a gray Nissan Sentra.

A joint investigation is currently ongoing involving the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the New York State Police. This morning detectives are continuing to gather statements and other physical evidence. They are being assisted in the investigation by the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department has arrested two (2) suspects for the January 28, 2014 robbery of the TEG Federal Credit Union, 11 Marist Drive, and the Riverside Bank robbery of February 20, 2014. The New York State Police will be filing additional robbery charges concerning the bank robbery at the First Niagara Bank in Pleasant Valley on February 12, 2014. They can be contacted for further comment.

One male suspect taken into custody will not be charged with the robberies in the Town of Poughkeepsie, however, drug related charges have been filed.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police were also assisted in this investigation by members of the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.

Autumn Conahan was arraigned on February 21, 2014 before Judge Paul Sullivan. Defendant was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond. She is scheduled to reappear in Town Justice Court on February 25, 2013 at 4:30 p.m.

Kevin Malfetano was arraigned on February 21, 2014 before Judge Paul Sullivan. Defendant was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to reappear in Town Justice Court on February 25, 2014 at 4:30 p.m.

Keith Surico was arraigned on February 21, 2104 before Judge Paul Sullivan. Defendant was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond. He is scheduled to reappear in Town Justice Court on February 25, 2014 at 4:30 p.m.

 

 February 18, 2014 – Arrest/Possession of an Assault Rifle

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is conducting ongoing investigations into a series of armed robberies occurring in the local area. Teams of detectives have been redeployed to conduct targeted surveillances throughout the town.

As part of the investigations concerning two (2) recent armed robberies in the Arlington area (Saigon Cafe and East Garden Kitchen), undercover officers are being assigned.

On Sunday, February 16, 2014, at approximately 10:18 p.m., a surveillance team watched a suspicious male subject in the vicinity of a recent armed robbery on Main Street in the Town of Poughkeepsie. The subject was subsequently stopped to be interviewed. He was found to be concealing an assault rifle hanging from his shoulder concealed under his outer coat. Detectives recovered a ‘Kriss’ semi-automatic assault rifle fully loaded with 11 rounds of ammunition. The male subject was taken into custody without further incident.

The defendant (see below) was charged with Criminally Possessing an Assault Weapon and Criminally Possessing Stolen Property under the New York State Penal Law, both felonies.

The recovered rifle was reported stolen in June of 2012 by a licensed firearms dealer in the Town of Pleasant Valley. It reportedly has a value of $1500.00.

The investigation is continuing.

The defendant was arraigned before Judge Paul Banner and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash or $40,000 bond. Defendant was directed to reappear in Town Justice Court on February 21, 2014.

 

February 13, 2014 – Armed Robbery

At approximately 8:20pm on Thursday, February 13, 2014 the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to a reported armed robbery that took place at the East Garden Kitchen located at 739 Main Street.

One masked male suspect entered the restaurant and demanded money from an employee of the restaurant while threatening the use of a handgun. The male left on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. No one was injured during the robbery.

Town of Poughkeepsie patrol officers, detectives and a town K-9 unit were immediately dispatched to the area. The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department also assisted at the scene.

The description of the suspect is as follows:

Black male, 6’1 – 6’2” tall, wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, a black ski mask and black gloves.

Febrary 12, 2014 – Armed Robbery

At approximately 8:51pm on Wednesday February 12, 2014 the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to a reported armed robbery that took place at the Saigon Cafe located at 2 Lagrange Avenue.

Two masked male suspects entered the restaurant and demanded money from the owners while threatening the use of handguns. The male suspects left on foot with an undetermined amount of cash. No one was injured during this robbery.

Town of Poughkeepsie Police patrol officers, detectives and a town K-9 unit were immediately deployed to the area.

The description of the suspects is as follows:

Suspect#1- black male, approx. 5’6′ tall, wearing a tan camouflage jacket and black knit hat

Suspect#2- black male, approx. 5’10’-6”0 tall, muscular build, wearing a dark colored winter jacket and a green knit hat

 Febrary 12, 2014 – Armed Barricaded Subject

On February 12, 2014 at approximately 2:18 p.m., the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to report of an apparently emotionally disturbed man armed with two (2) knives at the Manchester Garden Apartment complex located off Route 55 in the Arlington area of the Town. The male suspect has been determined to be alone in his apartment. There have been no reported injuries at this time.

The area immediately adjacent to the suspect’s apartment has been evacuated and is being secured by police patrols.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit have been dispatched to the location.

The suspect has been taken into custody at 4:05 p.m. and there are no reported injuries.

 February 6, 2014 – Armed Robbery

On February 4, 2014 at approximately 8:00pm the Town of Poughkeepsie Police responded for a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred at the Smokes 4 Less located at 3434 North Rd.

Three (3) masked men entered the store. A demand for cash was made and the store employee complied. The suspect(s) threatened the employee with a knife during the robbery. The suspects immediately left on foot with an undetermined amount of cash.

Responding Patrol Officers, Detectives and a Town Police K9 Unit were immediately deployed to the area. Town Police officers were able to apprehended two of the three suspects in the immedate area surrounding Delafield Street and Route 9. One suspect was not located.

There were no injuries reported during this robbery. A knife and a large portion of the stolen cash has been recovered.

The investigation is continuing. Whether the suspects were involved in a recent series of armed robberies in the Town and City of Poughkeepsie has not been determined at this time. Both defendants are believed to be related however exactly how they are related has yet to be determined.

The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department assisted during this robbery investigation.
