December 30, 2010 – Robbery, weapon
On Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at about 09:06PM , the Town of Poughkeepsie Police received a 911 call reporting that three people were robbed at gun point by a white male in the parking lot of HSBC Bank located at 1 LaGrange Avenue. The male suspect ran from the scene east on LaGrange Avenue after stealing money and other items.
The suspect displayed a handgun and is described as a white male, possibly bald, mid 30’s, 6′ tall with a slim build wearing a green jacket and a black hood. No injuries were reported and the Town of Pouighkeepsie Police K9 assisted in the search for the suspect.

December 27, 2010 – Larceny, General (not Shoplifting)
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department reports receiving a 911 Emergency call at approx. 11:00am reporting a larceny had just taken place at Zimmer Bros. Jewelers located at 39 Raymond Avenue in the Arlington section of the town.
A male subject entered the establishment and wished to examine the Rolex watches. After looking at one and being handed the second one, the subject ran out of the store with the watch in his possession. Just outside the store a customer was talking on his cell phone and saw what happened. The customer ran towards the subject and was able to give a description of the car, a dirty newer model Nissan Altima, burgundy in color.
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Dept. notified several local agencies and at approx. 11:23pm a New York State Trooper spotted the vehicle and stopped it on Rt. 84 approx. 4 miles west of the Taconic Parkway. As the trooper approached the driver in the car, he noticed another subject lying on the back seat who had covered himself up with his jacket. Town of Poughkeepsie detectives arrived on the scene and this subject was later identified as the person who stole the watch.
Both the driver (Nathaniel Morris) and subject who stole the watch (Ansumana J. Bility) were charged with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a Class D Felony.
The value of the watch was approx. $26,400.00 and the watch was recovered.
There were no injuries reported during this event.

Both subjects were arraigned in Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court before Judge Paul Sullivan and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash/$100,000 bond.
They will reappear in Town of Poughkeepsie Court on 12/27/10 @ 4:00pm.
December 21, 2010 – Theft/Use of Stolen Credit Cards
On 12/17/10 at approximately 1:30PM, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to the Poughkeepsie Plaza mall for the report of a wallet stolen from an unlocked vehicle. Further investigation revealed one of the victims credit cards was subsequently used to purchase $1,600.00 in gift cards from a business in the mall.
Approximately a half hour later, loss prevention staff from the Poughkeepsie Galleria Target store reported a male subject had just attempted to use stolen credit cards to purchase gift cards at that store. The male suspect fled on foot in to the mall.
Due to the holiday shopping season, members of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department have been assigned to anti crime patrols in malls and business areas. As a result, plain clothes detectives were in the mall when this call was received from Target. The suspect was quickly located in the mall and detained.
Subsequent investigation revealed this suspect had committed the earlier reported theft of a wallet from a vehicle. That victims wallet and credit cards were also recovered as a result of this arrest.
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department strongly urges citizens to always lock their vehicles when left unattended and to never leave valuables in plain view inside a vehicle.
Citizens are also reminded to immediately sign the back of their credit cards when they receive them. Without your signature, anyone can sign for the use of your card.
December 14, 2010 – Bank Robbery
At approx. 2:34pm on Monday December 13, 2010, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police responded to a report of a robbery that had just taken place at the Ulster Savings Bank located in the 44 Plaza on Burnett Blvd.
The suspect demanded money and left the scene on a bicycle in a northerly direction on Burnett Blvd.
The suspect is described as a white male, approx. 6’2′, possible age in the fifties, heavy build, wearing glasses, a red fleece jacket, tan cargo pants, white gloves and a white hat. A blue scarf covered partially covered his face.
The amount of money stolen is still being determined at this time.
There were no weapons displayed and there were no injuries reported.

December 1, 2010 – Criminal Possession of Stolen Property
On December 1, 2010, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department arrested John David Mason, d.o.b. 08/28/78, and charged him with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property, 4th degree, and Criminal Possession of a Hypodermic Instrument.
Chief Thomas Mauro reports this arrest was a result of an ongoing department Anti-Crime Surveillance initiative which is designed to aggressively investigate robbery and burglary cases in the Town of Poughkeepsie.
The investigation revealed that John Mason was in possession of stolen property, consisting of 20 pieces of gold jewelry, stolen during a burglary at a private residence on New Hackensack Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie which had occurred earlier the same day (December 1, 2010).
John Mason was arraigned before Judge Paul Banner in Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court. Defendant was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash/$50,000 bond.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department advises residents to follow a few suggested safety tips due to a rise in local coyote population. Residents in the Town of Poughkeepsie have been reporting the observance of coyotes in the daytime hours. Coyotes are not strictly nocturnal and will frequently travel in search of food during the daytime hours.
To reduce the risk of coyote’s in your yard, please be sure to remove potential food sources outside that may encourage the coyote to return. Potential food sources include uncovered trash cans, cat and dog food, birdseed on the ground and other edible items that can be left around the yard. It is recommended to keep cats indoors, do not allow small dogs to be unattended outside and be watchful when letting larger dogs outside, especially after dark.
If you feel threatened by a coyote in your yard, be aggressive in your behavior towards the coyote by making loud noises, wave your arms and throw things at it. If you believe the coyote may be sick or an immediate threat, you can contact the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department at 485-3666. November 12, 2010 – Stay Safe This Holiday Season
The Town of Poughkeeepsie Police Department reminds residents to be safe this holiday season with a few safety tips. When you’re shopping, park in well-lighted areas, remove packages and valuables including GPS devices and loose change from plain view by securing them in the trunk. Stay alert to your surroundings and don’t leave packages or purses unattended when you’re shopping.
Whenever you leave your home, make sure the doors and windows are secure, alarm systems are on and packages out of view to deter a potential burglar. If you’re traveling out of town, keep your lights on timers, have your driveway cleared of snow and have neighbors keep an eye on your home and retrieve your mail.
Criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts or illegitimate people or organizations going door to door for charitable donations. Ask for identification and their Peddler’s Permit issued by Town Hall. If you’re not comfortable or satisfied with their credentials, don’t give.
The holidays are a good time to update or create a home inventory. Take photos or videos of items, and list descriptions and serial nubmers. If your home is burglarized, having a detailed inventory can help identify and claim stolen itmes.
Most importantly, if you see something or someone suspicious, report it! When you’re a victim or witness to an incident, remember to get important detail information to the dispatcher that may include suspect’s physical and clothing description, direction of travel and vehicle description and license plate. November 12, 2010 – Senior Citizen Emergency Watch Program
With the winter weather approaching, The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department reminds residents of a program for senior citizens. The “Senior Citizen Emergency Watch Program” allows the police department to document in a computer database the names of senior citizens, where they reside, and important emergency contact information. In addition, information concerning potential special needs during unusual inclement weather event such as a severe snow storm or power outage. Police officers will be assigned to make visits as manpower and circumstances permit, to see if the senior citizen is in need of any special assistance. Participation in this program is completely voluntary and free. November 8, 2010 – Robbery with Weapon
On November 6, 2010 at 3:13 a.m. the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to Mobil on the Run located at 3480 North Road for a ‘911’ call reporting a robbery. Investigation revealed that this business was robbed by a white male reportedly armed with a small shotgun wrapped in a flannel shirt. Responding patrols and K9 Units could not locate the suspect.
On November 6, 2010 at 9:18 a.m. the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to Stewart’s located at 85 Creek Road for a hold-up alarm activation. Investigation revealed this business was robbed by a white male armed with what was believed to be a small caliber long gun wrapped in a flannel shirt. The description of this suspect was similar to the suspect in the robbery at Mobil on the Run.
During the investigation of the robbery at Stewart’s, police obtained a vehicle description for the vehicle used by the suspect to leave the scene. This information was sent out to surrounding agencies and the vehicle was located, unoccupied, in the City of Poughkeepsie. A search warrant was executed on the vehicle. Located in the vehicle was a tire iron wrapped in a flannel material which was believed to be the weapon used during the above robberies.
On November 6, 2010 at 7:58 p.m. the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to Stewart’s Ice Cream Shop located at 6 Manchester Circle for a hold-up alarm activation. Investigation revealed a white male armed with a large kitchen knife robbed the store. The physical description and video surveillance showed the same suspect responsible for the two prior robberies. A K9 search was conducted by the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department K9 Unit and located the knife used during the robbery which had been discarded close to the business.
Investigation revealed Joshua M. Berryann was responsible for all three robberies. All surrounding agencies were notified that Berryann was wanted for questioning. Berryann learned he was wanted by this agency and did then turn himself in at the New York State Police who then contacted this agency.
This investigation came to a successful resolution by a cooperative effort from the following law enforcement agencies:

November 2, 2010 – Burglary, Residence
Since September of 2010 the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department has been investigating a string of residential burglaries and attempted residential burglaries occurring throughout the Town.
The investigation, with the assistance of the Hyde Park Police Department and the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, revealed suspect individuals that the Departments were keeping under surveillance.
On Tuesday October 26, 2010 at 11:30 AM, the suspects were observed leaving the area of Ireland Drive in the Town of Poughkeepsie where a recent burglary was just reported. The suspects were stopped by the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and found to be in possession of stolen property. This property was from the recent burglary in the area of Ireland Drive as well as another burglary that had just been committed but not yet reported to police and property from past burglaries.
The suspects are accused of committing five (5) burglaries which occurred on Ireland Drive, Shamrock Circle, Cedar Avenue, Ray Boulevard, and Underhill Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie. The four (4) attempted burglaries occurred on Merrywood Avenue, Ludlow Drive, North Grand Avenue and Wayne Drive in the Town of Poughkeepsie.
Over Thirty thousand dollars ($30,000.00) in personal property from the victims of these burglaries has been recovered in this case.
Five suspects have been arrested in this investigation. One of the suspects charged was a juvenile and his name will not be released. His charges will be filed in Dutchess County Family Court.

November 1, 2010 – Town Snow Ordinance
Resident’s in the Town of Poughkeepsie are reminded of upcoming snow related ordinances in the town. No vehicle shall be parked on any street, road or highway in the Town of Poughkeepsie or a parking lot maintained by the town, between the hours of 12:00 A.M. –8 A.M. from November 1st-April 1st. In addition, owners or occupants of homes are reminded to remove snow and ice from sidewalks within four hours after any snowfall occurring between 6:00 A.M.-6:00 P.M. or within six hours thereafter. It is also the responsibility of the owner or occupant to remove snow from around a fire hydrant for a distance of two feet and between the sidewalk or the curb to keep the fire hydrant free from snow throughout the winter.

October 31, 2010 – DWI Check Point
The Town and City of Poughkeepsie Police Departments conducted a joint STOP D.W.I. Checkpoint on Saturday morning, October 31, 2010, from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. This checkpoint location was a Main Street at North and South Grand Avenues.
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department reports having 232 motorists pass through their checkpoint. Two (2) motorists were arrested for misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated and six (6) motorists were issued summonses for other Vehicle and Traffic offenses.
The City of Poughkeepsie Police Department reports having 592 motorists pass through their checkpoint. Three (3) motorists were arrested for misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated, one (1) passenger was arrested for Disorderly Conduct and four (4) motorists were issued summonses for other Vehicle and Traffic offenses.
There were no felony arrests reported.
October 27, 2010 – Accident, Personal Injury
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Traffic Enforcement Unit reports investigating an ATV roll over auto accident that occurred at approximately 3:16pm October 27, 2010 on Seitz Terrace. The ATV was being operated by a 39 year old Poughkeepsie man and 3 year juvenile passenger.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the ATV was being operated at an unsafe speed. The driver lost control of the ATV causing it to collide with a parked car. The ATV subsequently rolled over electing both the driver and the juvenile passenger. The driver and passenger were transported to Saint Francis Hospital with serious injuries. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police were assisted on scene by the Arlington Fire Department.

October 18, 2010 – Accident
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Traffic Enforcement Unit reports investigating a two-car personal injury motor vehicle accident that occurred at approximately 8:55 pm on October 17, 2010. This occurred on Vassar Road approximately 500 feet south of Mainetti Drive. A 2001 Ford was traveling northbound on Vassar Road and it drifted over into the southbound lane striking a 1998 Jeep head on. The Ford was operated by a 50 year old male, he was transported to Saint Francis Hospital and treated for his injuries. The Jeep was operated by a 23 year old male, he was transported to Saint Francis Hospital and treated for his injuries. A 26 year old Female was a passenger in the Jeep, she was also transported to Saint Francis Hospital for her injuries.
The operator of the Ford was distracted and he crossed over the double yellow line, into the oncoming lane of traffic striking the Jeep.
Vassar Road was closed for several hours while the vehicles were removed and the roadway was cleared. Town of Poughkeepsie Police were assisted by the Arlington Fire District. The accident is still under investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to call 845-485-3666.
October 18, 2010 – Larcenies from Vehicles
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is investigating a pattern of larcenies from vehicles occurring over the past few weeks. The larcenies have occurred on the following roads in the south end of the Town of Poughkeepsie:
- Pleasant Ridge Road
- Vassar Road
- Dallas Drive
- Brookland Farms Road
- Colburn Drive
- Kinry Road
- Gerry Road
- Argent Drive
- Troy Lane
All the larcenies are occurring during the overnight hours. Taken during these larcenies are coins, GPS units, Ipods and other electronics. All the vehicles involved in these crimes were left unsecured.
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department strongly urges all residents to take basic precautions against theft from their vehicles. Drivers are advised to lock their vehicles after they park. Valuables should be removed from the vehicle or stored out of sight. Criminals seek the path of least resistance. Vehicles that are locked or contain nothing of value will likely not be targeted.

October 18, 2010 – Endangering the Welfare of a Child
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department reports the arrest of Aaron E. Garner, d.o.b. 01/02/65, 31 Tompkins Avenue, Beacon, N.Y., for Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a class A Misdemeanor.
On October 5, 2010, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Dept. was notified after sexually explicit handwritten notes were written to an 8 year old 3rd grade student. A teacher at the Vassar Road Elementary School had discovered that these notes were being placed in the child’s pencil case.
An investigation was conducted which revealed that Garner was responsible for writing the notes.
Aaron Garner has been employed as a custodian for the Wappingers Central School District since 2002. He is presently assigned to the Vassar Road Elementary School.
Garner was charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child on October 8, 2010. He was released on his own recognizance to appear in Town of Poughkeepsie Court on October 26, 2010 at 4:00pm.

UPDATE: Arrests Made In Three Armed Robberies
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department has conducted ongoing investigations into the report of three (3) armed robberies on the following dates and locations:
On September 19, 2010 at approximately 11:00 p.m. two masked men entered the Dunkin Donuts store, located at 2580 South Road, Poughkeepsie NY. One suspect displayed a handgun and demanded cash from the employees. The employees complied and the suspects fled the area. No one was injured during the robbery.
On September 20, 2010 two masked men entered the Getty Gas Station located at 252 Innis Avenue, Poughkeepsie N.Y. at approximately 1:00 a.m. One suspect displayed a handgun and demanded cash from the employee. The employee complied and the suspects fled on foot. No one was injured during the robbery.
On September 27, 2010 one masked man entered Dunkin Donuts at approximately 1:00 a.m., just prior to closing, and told an employee to hand over the money. The suspect displayed a handgun.
During this investigation detectives subsequently determined that an employee (Julian K. Ellsworth), who was initially thought to be a victim during both Dunkin Donuts robberies, was in fact criminally involved in the planning and actual commission of both robbery events at Dunkin Donuts.
Three subjects have been arrested and charged with Robbery, 1st degree, Class B/Felony, for the following armed robberies:
All three defendants were arraigned at Town Justice Court by Judge Paul Banner and Judge Paul Sullivan. All defendants were remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail.
September 29, 2010 – Homicide UPDATE
Chief of Police Thomas Mauro reports the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is continuing the investigation of the homicide reported at 3 Henmond Boulevard in the Town of Poughkeepsie.
On September 29, 2010, a team of Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department Detectives who conducted the crime scene investigation traveled to the New York State Police Forensic Science and Investigation Center in Albany, N.Y. Forensic Science Examiners will be evaluating evidence collected at the crime scene. The exact type of evidence collected will not be disclosed. Officials at the Crime Lab will be giving the evidence priority examination status. This process is expected to take a minimum of three (3) to four (4) weeks.
Chief Thomas Mauro reports that Detectives assigned full-time to this investigation continue to follow-up on information provided by the public. In addition, Detectives are interviewing acquaintances who may have had recent contact with the victim.
The victim is Ronald T. Green, age 59, a resident of Dutchess Turnpike in the Town of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The autopsy results concluded that the victim died of a stab wound to the upper torso. Members of the Dutchess County District Attorneys Office are continuing to work jointly with the Police Department.

September 29 2010 – Armed Robbery
On 9/27/10 at approximately 1:00AM, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded for a hold up alarm activation at the Dunkin Donuts store, located at 2580 South Road, Poughkeepsie NY. Upon arrival, responding officers confirmed that an armed robbery had occurred at the business.
Further investigation revealed that a black male suspect, dressed in dark clothing, entered the business and displayed a handgun. The employees were ordered to turn over cash to the suspect who fled on foot. No one was injured during the robbery. The amount of cash taken is unknown at this time. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department Canine Unit assisted with the investigation at the scene. Detectives are investigating whether or not there is a connection to this robbery and the one at the same location on 9/19/10.

September 22, 2010 – Homicide UPDATE
Chief of Police Thomas Mauro reports the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is continuing the investigation of the homicide reported at 3 Henmond Boulevard in the Town of Poughkeepsie.
On September 22, 2010, Dr. Dennis Chute of the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office, completed an autopsy of the victim.
The victim is Ronald T. Green, age 59, a resident of Dutchess Turnpike in the Town of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The autopsy results concluded that the victim died of a stab wound to the upper torso.
A preliminary investigation thus far has disclosed that the victim was a personal acquaintance of the homeowner at 3 Henmond Boulevard. The reason for the victim visiting the home on September 21, 2010 is part of the ongoing investigation.
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department’s Crime Scene Technicians are continuing to process forensic evidence. Evidence from the crime scene will be evaluated by the New York State Police Crime Laboratory.
Chief Thomas Mauro reports that a substantial number of detectives remain assigned to the case on a full-time basis. Members of the Dutchess County District Attorneys Office have also been assigned to assist in the investigation.

Chief of Police Thomas Mauro reports the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is currently at a private residence on Henmond Boulevard in the Town of Poughkeepsie which is located off of Route 55 for the report of a possible seriously injured person.
At 2:47 p.m. Dutchess County ‘911’ contacted the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department reporting an unconscious male possibly injured during a burglary or robbery at the home.
Chief Thomas Mauro reports that this investigation has been classified as a homicide. Detectives from the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department are conducting a forensic examination of the crime scene and conducting a series of interviews. Also assisting at the crime scene are members of the Dutchess County Medical Examiners Office and the Dutchess County District Attorneys Office.
At this writing no information is being released concerning the deceased.
September 20, 2010 – Armed Robbery
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is investigating two armed robberies that occurred during the overnight hours of Sunday, September 19th, 2010 into Monday, September 20th, 2010.
On 9/19/10 at approximately 11:00PM, two masked men entered the Dunkin Donuts store, located at 2580 South Road, Poughkeepsie NY. Both suspects wore dark colored clothing and had their faces covered. One suspect was approximately 5’10’ tall and the other was approximately 5’5′ tall.
One suspect displayed a handgun and demanded cash from the employees. The employees complied and the suspects fled the area in a gray colored full size van. No one was injured during the robbery.
On 9/20/10 at approximately 12:00AM, two masked men entered the Getty gas station located at 252 Innis Avenue, Poughkeepsie NY. The description of the suspects was similar to the description given by the victims of the previous robbery at Dunkin Donuts. One suspect displayed a handgun and demanded cash from the employee. The employee complied and the suspects fled on foot. No one was injured during the robbery. The Dutchess County Sheriffs Office K-9 Unit assisted at the scene.

On Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 9:05pm, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to K&D Deli located on 200 Saltpoint Turnpike for the report of an Armed Robbery. The suspect entered the rear of the store pointed a hand gun at two employees who were working in the area and demanded cash from the register.
The suspect is described as a black male wearing a black jacket and dark jeans. He left the store on foot in an unknown direction with an undetermined amount of cash. A Town of Pouhgkeepsie K-9 unit responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. There were no injuries as a result of this incident.

August 30, 2010 – Graffiti Arrest
On 8/12/10 at approximately 4:30PM the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department investigated a report of suspicious persons in the rear lot of Shop Rite located at 1895 South Road.
Upon arrival at the scene, investigating officers located five male subjects on foot. During the course of the investigation, one male subject was found to be in possession of a partially used can of spray paint.
Further investigation revealed this subject had spray painted graffiti on the rear of the Burlington Coat Factory building located at 1895 South Road, as well as a store in the Village of Wappinger Falls. The Village of Wappingers Falls Police were contacted and advised of the crime in their jurisdiction.
The defendant was charged and arraigned as noted below. Anyone observing suspicious persons, especially those defacing property, are asked to contact the police immediately. August 30, 2010 – Larcenies from Vehicles
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is investigating a pattern of larcenies from vehicles occuring over this past weekend. The larcenies occurred in the Overocker Road area, specifically Dublin Drive, Ireland Drive and Shamrock Circle.
All the larcenies are occuring during the overnight hours. Taken during these larcenies are change, GPS units and ipods. All the vehicles involved in these crimes were left unsecured.
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department strongly urges all residents to take basic precautions against theft from their vehicles. Drivers are advised to lock their vehicles after they park. Valuable items such as GPS units, ipods, money and satellite radios should be removed from the vehicle or stored out of sight. Criminals seek the path of least resistance. Vehicles that are locked or contain nothing of value will likely not be targeted.

August 26, 2010 – Residential Burglaries – Victims With Asian Surnames
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is currently investigating a pattern of residential burglaries occurring in the Hagantown area of the Town of Poughkeepsie. A total of five (5) burglaries were reported in June and July of 2010. In addition, an attempted burglary fitting the same pattern occurred in the Town of Poughkeepsie in the vicinity of Route 376 which was interrupted by the homeowner. All the burglary victims involved have Asian surnames. The suspects are primarily targeting residences where the homeowner is away during the daytime hours. Three (3) of the five (5) victim homeowners were away on vacation. Cash, jewelry and personal documents are being taken during the course of these burglaries.
This burglary pattern is similar to a series of burglaries to private residences occurring in other communities throughout Dutchess County. All involved victims with Asian surnames. Ten (10) burglaries have occurred in the Towns of East Fishkill, Unionvale, LaGrange, Beekman and the Town of Wappingers. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is working in conjunction with the law enforcement agencies in Dutchess County that are investigating similar crimes. These departments are the New York State Police, Dutchess County Sheriffs Office and the Town of East Fishkill Police Department. Similar criminal activity in the New York City Metropolitan area, Westchester County, Connecticut and New Jersey indicates that the suspects are likely part of an organized burglary ring.
The investigation to date has disclosed that victim homeowners have left unsecured doors and windows in their homes. In some of the burglaries, personal documents consisting of deeds, passports and social security cards were stolen. These personal documents were often left in an unsecured and easily obtained area of the home.
All homeowners are strongly urged follow simple crime prevention tips to lower the chance of being burglarized. Lock all doors and windows, properly secure valuable documents in a safe or safe deposit box, install exterior motion and lighting detectors and consider installing a home alarm system. Residents are urged to contact their local police agency immediately if they see any suspicious vehicles or persons in their neighborhoods. Anyone with information concerning this investigation is asked to contact the law enforcement agency that covers their jurisdiction.
August 23, 2010 – Assault, 2nd degree
On Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at approximately 7:54 p.m. the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department received a ‘911’ call stating that a female was just assaulted at 1-3 Collegeview Avenue, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Further investigation revealed that the assault was a domestic incident between a husband and wife. The husband, later identified as Jaroslaw Wysocki, assaulted his wife with a metal pipe and then chocked her. Upon arrival of responding officers the male suspect had left the scene on foot. He did later return to the scene at which time he was placed in custody.
The female victim was transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center where she was treated and released.

August 20, 2010 – Suicidal Person
At 2:30 p.m. the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department received a report of a 22 year old suicidal male subject threatening to jump off the top level of the parking garage at St. Francis Hospital. This parking garage is four (4) stories high and located at the northeast side of the hospital complex.
A preliminary investigation disclosed that a family member was attempting to bring the male subject voluntarily to the hospital for psychological evaluation. Upon arrival at the hospital the male subject went to the top floor of the parking garage and threatened to jump off the ledge.
Town of Poughkeepsie Chief of Police Thomas Mauro has commended the commanding officer at the scene, Captain Paul Lecomte, and four (4) Police Officers for their lifesaving actions in this incident.
First responders secured the surrounding area and initiated communication with the male subject. Members of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department Crisis Negotiation Unit attempted communicating with the male subject until approximately 7:00 p.m. During the course of the negotiations, Police Officers continually attempted to get closer to the male subject. At approximately 7:00 p.m. Town of Poughkeepsie Police Negotiators Sergeant Brian Wagner, Detective Patrick Nesbitt and Detective Frank Denardo, assisted by P.O. Brian Mullen, became concerned that the male subject was at imminent risk of falling. Working together, the officers were able to grab the male subject and physically restrain him and safely removed him from the four story ledge. The male subject was escorted into St. Francis Hospital where he is receiving follow-up treatment.
Chief Thomas Mauro stated that the positive outcome in this case was the result of police professionals responding to their training and experience. ”Our Crisis Negotiation Unit has received basic and advanced training from the FBI and the New York City Police Department Hostage Negotiation Team. This training was further enhanced in 2010 when two Crisis Negotiators from the Phoenix Arizona Police Department conducted advanced training at the department in cooperation with the National Tactical Officers Association. I am extremely proud of the role that the Crisis Negotiators played in the successful resolution of this incident. These police officers are responsible for saving this man’s life. Preserving human life is the ultimate goal of every law enforcement professional”.
Assisting at the scene were the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department, Fairview Fire Department and St. Francis Hospital Security Staff and personnel.
August 13, 2010 – Attempted Robbery
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department is investigating a report of an attempted robbery which occurred on Fowler Avenue in the Town of Poughkeepsie.
On August 13, 2010 at approximately 1:44 a.m. a male and female subject did make forced entry into a residence and assaulted a resident while attempting to locate property.

The male suspect fled the area on foot and the female left in a vehicle.
No items were taken from the residence. One female victim was transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center where she was treated and released.
The Dutchess County Sheriffs Office assisted in the investigation and completed a K9 track.

July 27, 2010 – Elder Crimes Arrest
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department reports investigating a pattern of thefts involving elderly victims. The reported thefts occurred in July and involved cash, jewelry and personal checks being taken from the victims residences. The checks were later forged and cashed at local banks.
The investigation disclosed that there were at least three victims, all elderly, who were using the services of a private home health care aide.
The investigation also revealed that the defendant Brandy Marie Lee stole property from three of her clients. The second defendant Elizabeth Monopoli is not a home health care aide.Town of Poughkeepsie Police detectives learned that the home health care aide gained the trust of her elderly victims to discover the location of the personal property that was stolen.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department strongly urges all senior citizens and their families to immediately report any suspicious activity by health care aides or other privately contracted employees working in their home.
Family members who employ home health care aides for elderly relatives are strongly urged to inquire about the background, certifications and quality of care offered by the contracting agency.

July 7, 2010 – Personal Injury Accident
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Traffic Enforcement Unit reports investigating a tractor-trailer roll over auto accident that occurred at approximately 2:27pm on July 7, 2010 on Route 376 just south of the intersection with Vassar Road. The tractor-trailer was being operated by a 39 year old Wappingers Falls man.
Preliminary investigation reveals that the tractor-trailer was being operated at an unsafe speed. As the vehicle travelled south on Spackenkill Road approaching the Red Oaks Mill intersection the driver lost control of the vehicle causing the tractor-trailer to roll onto its side. The driver was transported to Saint Francis Hospital with minor injuries. Town of Poughkeepsie Police were assisted on the scene by Arlington Fire Department.

June 25, 2010 – Discovery of Dead Body
On June 25, 2010 at approximately 12:00 noon the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department was notified by a repairman working in the vicinity of IBM Road near Route 9 that he had discovered human remains in a wooded area.
Preliminary investigation conducted by the Detective Division of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department indicated that the remains were severely decomposed but the body is that of an unidentified adult female.
The Dutchess County Medical Examiner is assisting with a post mortem investigation in an attempt to determine the cause of death and the identity of the deceased.
The investigation is continuing.
June 16, 2010 – Robbery
On June 16, 2010 at approximately 2:06 a.m. the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to the area of the Mountainbrook Apartment Complex adjacent to Corlies Avenue for the report a person who had been the victim of a robbery. The suspects approached two males, ages 17 and 18, who were walking in the area at the time. One victim was physically assaulted and subsequently the suspects stole cash and a cell phone. The second male victim ran from the scene and was able to seek assistance and call 911.
The suspects left the area and were last seen driving into the City of Poughkeepsie. The victims provided a description of the suspect’s vehicle which was broadcast to area police agencies. At approximately 2:40 a.m. a City of Poughkeepsie Police Officer alertly spotted the vehicle in the vicinity of Hooker Avenue in the City of Poughkeepsie. The suspect’s vehicle was stopped without incident and the five (5) occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody.
A joint investigation conducted by the Town of Poughkeepsie and City of Poughkeepsie Police Departments has resulted in the arrest of four (4) males and one (1) female.
Both victims were not injured in this incident and are cooperating with the police agencies. No weapons were threatened or displayed. The cash and the cell phone were recovered.
All five (5) defendants were arraigned in the Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court by Judge Paul Sullivan and remanded to Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $100,000.00 bail. The defendants are due back in Town of Poughkeepsie Justice Court on June 17, 2010.

June 2, 2010 – Larceny
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police were contacted by Verizon Wireless Security during March of this year about a contracted employee working at Verizon Wireless, 1839 South Road, Poughkeepsie, that was stealing cell phones and accessories.
A subsequent investigation by the Detective Division for the past two and half months resulted in the arrest of the suspect, Nakia Howell, age 26, of Wappingers Falls NY. Howell is accused of stealing over $18,000 in property while working at Verizon Wireless over an eight month period.

June 1, 2010 – Arson
On May 30, 2010 at 10:25 p.m. the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department responded to White’s Marina located on Point Street in New Hamburg for the report of a boat on fire in the marina.
The New Hamburg Fire Department subsequently extinguished a fire on a 1993 – 25′ SeaRay, model 250 Express pleasure craft. The boat sustained considerable damage. It is valued at $16,500.00. A second boat, parked in a adjacent slip, received minor fire damage.
An investigation conducted by the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department has resulted in the arrest of a male defendant responsible for this fire on May 31, 2010. The investigation disclosed that the defendant used a match to light a tarp covering the boat. The Dutchess County Cause & Origin Team assisted the police department during the investigation.

The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department reports expected traffic delays on Thursday May 27th, intermittently between noon and 5:00 PM. The expected delays will occur on Spackenkill Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie, between Boardman Road and Cedar Valley. The police department recommends motorists travelling Spackenkill Road during this time, use a different route of travel. Motorists will be able to detour off Spackenkill Road onto Cedar Valley Road and Boardman Road.

May 17, 2010 – Robbery, weapon
On Monday, May 17, 2010 at about 12:20 am in the morning, the Town of Poughkeepsie Police received a 911 call from three employees at Burger King, 53 Dutchess Turnpike, reporting that they were robbed at gun point by two males. The robbery occurred in the parking lot of the business when the employees left the store after their shift. The two men ran from the scene east on Dutchess Turnpike after stealing money and other items from one of the employees.
The suspect displayed a handgun and is described as a white male, light hair, about 5’10’ with a slim build, late teens to early twenties. The second suspect is described as a dark skinned male about 5’9”, slim build, early twenties. Anyone that may have witnessed the incident or suspicious persons in the area around the time of the incident are asked to call the Town of Poughkeepsie Police at (845) 485-3666 or the Detective Division at (845) 485-3670. Lifesaving Awards Presented To P.O. Dawn Abbagliato & Lieutenant Douglas Hauseman
On June 14, 2009, Lieutenant Douglas Hauseman and P.O. Dawn Abbagliato assisted the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the New York State Police at the scene of a suicidal subject threatening to jump off the Mid Hudson Bridge. Both officers, using their Crisis Negotiation Training and experience, successfully secured this disturbed person from physical harm. The on scene negotiations lasted for more than four (4) hours.
The actions of Lieutenant Hauseman and P.O. Abbagliato reflect most positively upon the reputation of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the community we serve.
Lifesaving Award Presented To P.O. Robert Taylor
On February 21, 2010, P.O. Robert Taylor responded to the scene of an unconscious male not breathing and with no pulse. P.O. Taylor arrived at the scene with the Arlington Fire Department. P.O. Taylor took over CPR that was already in progress by the victim’s wife and after continuing with CPR the victim regained a pulse and began breathing on his own. The victim was subsequently transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center.

Lifesaving Award Presented To P.O. Patrick Barry
On November 27, 2009, P.O. Patrick Barry responded to the scene of an unconscious male. He quickly began CPR and continued until the arrival of New Hamburg Fire Department personnel and paramedics. By administering CPR the subject was able to regain consciousness and a steady pulse. He was transported to Vassar Brother Medical Center.
The actions of P.O. Barry reflect most positively upon the reputation of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and the community we serve.
Civilian Award Presented To Javon Parris
On December 9, 2009, Mr. Parris witnessed a female Marist College student in distress on Route 9 near the college. The female victim had been confronted by a male subject threatening her with a knife and a gun. The suspect attempted to take the victim to a darkened area adjacent to the highway.
Javon Parris, witnessing this event and without regard to his own personal safety, confronted the suspect causing the suspect to flee. Due to his direct actions in this emergency, Javon Parris assisted police patrols in locating and identifying the suspect who was subsequently charged with Attempted Kidnapping in the 2nd degree.
Javon Parris’ actions, taken without regard to his own safety, exemplify the definition of a selfless hero and good citizen.
Civilian Award Presented To Felipe R. Medina
On December 4, 2009, Felipe Medina took immediate action with disregard for his own personal safety by physically detaining the fleeing suspect from a shoplifting incident. He continued to restrain the suspect until the arrival of police patrols.
It should be noted that Felipe Medina took these actions without being asked by anyone to assist nor was he obligated in anyway to intervene.
He is recognized for his courageous actions and the assistance he provided to the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department and our greater community.

April 27, 2010 – Road Closure
On Sunday, May 2, 2010, Chabad Lubuvitch of the Mid Hudson Valley will be having a parade in the Red Oaks Mill section of the Town of Poughkeepsie.
This parade is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and is expected to end by 4:00 p.m.

April 16, 2010 – Robbery, weapon
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police responded to a reported robbery that occurred at approximately 1a.m. on Friday, 04/16/2010 in the area of Rhoebella Drive (Manchester Gardens)
The victim reported to town police that he was approached by four males and forced to surrender personal property. At least one of the suspects displayed what appeared to be a handgun.
The victim was not injured.
The suspects were described as being black males, approximately 17-25 years of age. All four suspects were wearing dark hooded sweatshirts and jeans. The suspects fled the area on foot.
The Town of Poughkeepsie K-9 officer and canine assisted in the investigation.

April 16, 2010 – Grand Larceny
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police report the arrest of two males, each charged with Grand Larceny 4th.
During the evening hours of Thursday, 04/15/2010, Town of Poughkeepsie Police were notified by Vassar College Campus Security that security officers had located two males on the campus who were unable to produce identification and appeared to be trespassing.
Upon further investigation police determined that the males had committed a series of larcenies from the college during the past several days and weeks that involved the theft of electronics as well as personal property valued in excess of five thousand dollars.
Town Police report that the investigation is continuing.
The males were identified as:
Thomas C. Wheeler, age 21
67 Taft Ave., Poughkeepsie,NY
Robert G. Vrana, age 20
67 Taft Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY
Both subjects were charged with one count of Grand Larceny 4th (E Felony) and are scheduled to appear in Town of Poughkeepsie Court on May 4th, 2010, 4pm.

April 11, 2010 – Accident, Personal Injury
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department reports the investigation of a 1 car motor vehicle accident in which a 3 year old Hyde Park boy fell out of a moving vehicle. The child’s mother was driving South on Route 9, braking her vehicle for the approaching traffic signal at the intersection with IBM Road, when the child came out of his car seat, opened the left rear sliding door of the 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport mini-van, and exited the vehicle. The child was sitting in the left rear seat position behind the vehicle operator. The boy exited the vehicle striking his head on the roadway and sustained injuries that are non-life threatening at this time. Witnesses, including an off duty EMT, attended to the child who was transported to St. Francis Hospital. He was subsequently flown via helicopter to Westchester County for further care. The investigation is continuing, including whether the sliding door was locked or unlocked, and the type of child restraint used.
April 21, 2010 – The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit has concluded its investigation of the April 11, 2010 accident on Route 9 involving a 3-year-old child falling from a moving vehicle.
Traffic Accident Reconstruction Specialists from the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department determined that the child was improperly restrained in a booster style car seat. The child was secured with the lap belt only. The booster seat was not age appropriate for the 3-year-old. The manufacturer specifications stated that the booster seat was for a child over 4 years of age and over 40 pounds. The 1998 Pontiac Trans Sport minivan is equipped with child safety door locks on the rear doors. The investigation disclosed that both back doors did not have this safety feature engaged at the time of the accident. In addition, investigators learned that the vehicle door locks functioned but were unable to determine if the doors were locked or unlocked prior to the accident.
The child suffered a skull fracture but avoided any brain injury or other medical complications and has been released home from the Westchester Medical Center. The operator of the vehicle, the child’s mother, was issued a Vehicle and Traffic summons for violation of New York State V&T Law, section 1229 C1A “Child Less Than 4 Years of Age Unrestrained”. The police department has also made a formal referral to Dutchess County Child Protective Services.
Chief Thomas Mauro is also commending the timely response by motorists at the scene who stopped to assist the child. A volunteer EMT from Westchester County, along with two (2) active duty members of the United States Marine Corp., prevented the child from being struck by motor vehicle traffic and provided emergency first aid. Members of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department Traffic Division contacted Mr. James Hess, Car Seat Program Supervisor for Health Quest. This company donated a new age appropriate car seat for the child. Police Officers installed the car seat with the mother at Town Police headquarters today.

March 24, 2010 – In-service Training for Town Police Officers
The Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department has begun a series of important in-service training sessions for its 87 member police force on the topic of “Responding to Situations Involving Emotionally Disturbed Persons”. Earlier this year, two (2) Town of Poughkeepsie Police Officers received 35 hours of instructor level training recommended and provided by the New York State Office of Mental Health and the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services for police officers. They have now been assigned to deliver this training to the entire department.
The State recommended in-service training for police officers is designed to include essential information about identifying, responding to, and following up on situations involving persons who are emotionally disturbed.
Chief Thomas Mauro stated that “the departments overall objectives are to provide a more in depth examination of frequently encountered mental illnesses. In addition, the training program is designed to increase officers understanding of the behavioral symptoms of emotional disturbance. It is our goal to help officers assess and intervene in situations involving emotionally disturbed persons in a manner that promotes safety to everyone concerned”
